Independence Day

My boys are growing up way too fast. Today, Ben has amazed me several times with how old he is. He got himself dressed all by himself this morning (and picked out clothes that matched...his dad can't even do that all the time)! He did forget his underwear, but oh well, as my dad said, perhaps he just wanted to go commando!

He also went to the bathroom by himself for the first time in a public place. Now, before my mom calls me and threatens to take the boys away from me, I in no way wanted this to happen, nor do I think it is entirely appropriate. We were in the checkout line at Walmart with all of our groceries on the conveyor belt and people behind us waiting. Ben announced that he had to go to the bathroom and squatted down on the ground with an urgent look in his eyes that indicated he was serious. The bathroom was, fortunately, right in front of my checkout lane and with Joey in the cart, groceries being rung up, and a nearly 4 year old about to have pee running down his leg, I felt I had no choice. I told him he could go by himself...he was thrilled. I was, of course, a nervous wreck, but he was in and out in no time and was so proud of himself. Again, mom, I promise I won't allow this to become a habit. Seriously though, 4 seems young, but at what age do you allow your kids to start going to the bathroom on their own in public??

This afternoon Ben has been begging me to go outside and play since we finally have sunshine in Indiana again after several days of rain and cold. It is still a bit too chilly for Joe to go out but I finally relented and let Ben play in the backyard by himself. I can hear him and watch him from the kitchen. Thank God for the new swingset Dean built a couple of weekends ago!

My other independent child has been challenging me to allow him to feed himself. Joey is not a very big fan of rice cereal these days so we tried oatmeal today and he is fine...as long as he can feed himself. He makes a mess, but it is pretty entertaining to watch.

I am enjoying watching my little men exert their independence today.

Jack wanted to say hello too! Woof Woof!

I LOVE these pictures. What great boys you have. Ben is very brave (or desperate) to go to the bathroom by himself... I fear you may have created a monster allowing him to do it today.

What great kids - I love all of their expressions. Ben's goofy poses for the camera and Joe showing off his feeding abilities by raising his spoon - priceless.

All my love,

Aunt Cherrylynn

I'm shaking so bad I can barely type!!!! YOU NEVER LET YOUR CHILDREN GO TO THE BATHROOM BY THEMSELVES IN PUBLIC. Just ask your brother who is 25 years old!!!
