I'm not sure if any child has ever looked sweeter on their first day of school than my little Joe Bug! Joey thinks he is SOO big, thanks in large part to the fact that he has a big brother and Joe tries to be just like Ben. That said, school was not at all daunting to Joey. He woke up fired up for school and gave us a big grin and "yeaaahhh" when we told him today was the day he got to go to school like bubba.
Joey enjoyed his breakfast and played with Ben for a bit before brushing his teeth, grabbing his red backpack and cars lunchbox and preparing to head out the door for a photo shoot. We did have a funny moment when I tried to put his backpack on and Joe nearly fell over. Ben started to make fun of Joe until I reminded him that he was once Joe's size and pointed out that poor Joey's backpack was nearly as big as he was!
Joe posed for some pics for me before crawling into the van and heading to school. I was basically the boys paparazzi as we walked into the building, a fact that annoyed Ben to no end. Joey excitedly greeted his teachers, Miss Kasey (our next door neighbor) and Miss Ginger (both of whom were Ben's teachers last year) and began playing with his friend from church, Macy DeLisle. I did manage to get a kiss from him, but have to admit that it was really strange dropping off a kiddo on the very first day of school with no tears...from him or me!
I'm so proud of Joe and his independence, curiosity, and self confidence. I should probably note that the day did not end quite as smoothly as it began. As I approached Joe's classroom at about 2:20 p.m. to pick him up I heard him screaming. As I entered the room he was under the snack table crying hysterically and asking for "mo." His teachers assumed that he was really missing his "mo"mmy and I quickly told them that "mo" is actually his word for milk so the poor bug had evidently been crying for about 30 minutes for milk and was growing increasingly frustrated that they kept telling him his mom would be there soon. While I'm sure he was thrilled to see me, he really just wanted his "mo," which I found in his lunchbox nearly 3/4 full. We had a discussion about how he really needed to make sure he drank it during lunch time next week!
Joey survived his first day (though barely it would seem judging by the shape he was in upon my arrival!!). When asked immediately following my arrival if Joey liked his first day of school his reponse was a resounding "NOOOOOOOO!" After his nap and some fun outside washing my car with Ben and our neighbor Mason, Joe changed his tune and told his daddy when he got home from work that "yesh" he did have fun at school today!
