At church on Sunday, Joey and I snuck into the sanctuary during the second service to listen to Ben sing with the children's choir. As we were sitting in the pew, Joey and I had the following whispered conversation.
Joey: "Where is Jesus?"
Me: "There is a picture of him up there?" I said as I pointed to a stained glass picture of Jesus above the pulpit
Joey: "But is he here?"
Me: "Yes, honey. He is here."
Joey: "Where? I can't see him."
At this point a couple of people around us had taken note of our conversation and were smiling at us. When I said this was a whispered conversation, I meant that I whispered. The art of being quiet is lost on Joey. His "whisper" is more like a muffled shout.
Me: "Joey, remember, we've talked about this. Jesus is in your heart."
Joey: "I know but I want him to come out so I can see him."
Me: "Ok, honey. We'll talk about this later."
So we did talk about it later. It is such a hard concept to explain to a very literal 3-year-old; the concept that someone can be with us at all times, yet unseen. I tried to explain to Joey that Jesus is in our hearts and whenever we do something kind for someone, or say something nice, or love someone then we are showing them Jesus and similarly when other people do nice things for or say nice things to or love us, we can then see Jesus in them. Not sure he got it, but it was a nice little reminder for me. I have not been a very good living testament to Jesus lately. I suspect God was trying to get this message through to me by whispering in Joey's ear to teach me a lesson and remind me that I need to live my life so that other's can see Jesus in me. Message received. Thanks, Joe Bug!
