Is there anything sweeter than a little boy in a soccer uniform? Nope, I don't think so.
There are officially TWO little soccer stars in our house now. That's right, Joey has taken the field. Watch out.
Joe was "recruited" by my friend Nickie who was coaching her daughter's (and one of Joey's good buddies) U6 league. You are technically supposed to be 4 years old by July 1 to play in the U6 league but the commishioner of the league upon hearing who Joey's dad and brother were promptly said "oh yeah, I would let him play right now...he has been on a soccer field his whole life...surely he has picked up some knowledge by osmosis!" And a star was born...
Joey is officially obsessed with soccer. He LOVES running around and scoring goals but his true passion is playing defense. His first game he ran across the field and jumped into the goal to try to stop his friend Toby Cork from scoring yet another goal on Joey's team. Joe crouched down, held out his hands, and put on a super intense, intimidating face. AND he blocked the shot! Two of them as a matter of fact! The fans were dying laughing; so sweet and confident was our little Joe Bug.
Ben continues to really grow in his soccer skills as well. He is becoming a very smart player, learning to play to the strengths of his teamates and learning to manage his energy; holding back a bit on offense and running at full strength on defense. It is really fun to watch him play and Joey and I remain his biggest fans while Dean is still the best coach ever.
Having never been an athlete myself, I am so impressed with the committment and intensity with which my boys both play sports. Ben has been playing sports since he was about 3 years old and has never, ever, that I can recall complained about having to go to a practice or a game. Joey is obviously much newer to competitive sports but he literally cries on days when he doesn't have practice or a game! Luckily both boys practice on Mondays and Wednesdays (Joey from 5:30-6:30 and Benny from 6-7) and their games are on Saturdays for the most part (Joey at 9 and Benny at 10:30) so I don't have to miss watching the majority of both boys playing time and there is not too big of a disruption to our family time either. I imagine "family time" will involve being on some type of sports surface for the forceable future as both boys will be playing basketball this fall/winter and baseball in the spring.
