A Whole Hand!

Today my beautiful big boy turned 5 years old, or as Ben likes to say, "a whole hand!" I truly cannot put into words how fast the past 5 years have gone. I so vividly remember the exact moment when Ben was gently placed in my arms and looked up at me with deep, dark, serious eyes, blinked a couple of times, and then just stared at me as if to say "watch out lady, we're about to go on one heck of an adventure." And oh what an adventure it has been!
Being Ben's mom has been both an honor and a challenge, a joy and a challenge, an exciting time and a challenge, the greatest privilege I can imagine...and a challenge!!! The one thing I can say with no uncertainty is that I wouldn't change a thing when it comes to the past 5 years spent in Ben's company. Even the not so great times have somehow managed to teach us lessons and have made the good times even sweeter.
I am feeling a bit emotional so rather than go on and on about how terrific I think my boy is...I will share his birthday week of fun instead! And when I say week of fun, I do indeed mean WEEK of fun!
The good times began on Tuesday night with a birthday party for family and a few friends at Chuckie Cheese. Ben and his friends had so much fun and it was awesome for the adults to watch their excitement as well. At the end of the night Ben declared it "the best birthday party ever" and announced that all of his future parties will most definitely be at Chuckie Cheese. Joy.
I know this post should be all about Ben, but Joey had a great time at the party, too! Our dear friend Abby took care of him all night which was such a blessing. Before bedtime Ben and I were in the kitchen looking through his loot and reading his cards and I read Abby's card and said "Ahhh, Abby is the best. What would we do without her?" Without missing a beat and not even looking up from the toy he was playing with, Ben responded "We. would. be. hosed." True.
On Thursday Oma and Ben went on a date. They went shopping to pick out a birthday present for Ben...but it somehow turned into many, many birthday presentS for Benny! After shopping they enjoyed a lunch date at McDonalds and then headed back to Oma's for play time. Ben had an amazing time and though I'm afraid Oma's wallet took quite a beating, I think she loved their time just as much.
Friday Dean was off so we had a family trip to the Zoo. It was so much fun and even though it was quite crowded, we managed to check out several of the boys favorite animals and the boys liked showing Daddy all their favorite spots. After the zoo we had lunch at Chick-Fil-A and then the boys had doctors appointments. Joey had to have 3 shots and Ben had to have 1...the great news for Benny, though, is that (not including the flu shot) he is DONE with shots until he is 11 years old. That is 6 whole years (or "more years than I have even been alive" my little math wizard quickly deduced) shot free! Wahoo!
Friday night we just grilled out and played some corn hole and baseball and played with our neighbors and had a quick visit from nana, bampaw, mal-mal, and uncle craig.
Saturday morning, the big day, finally arrived and per usual mommy was up well before anyone else! The boys all slept in past 8 and Ben eagerly tore into his gifts once he finally pried his eyes open!
He was really excited about his new bike and leapster game and perhaps not so pumped about the new socks and underwear (they were wolverine though so we got some points for that)!
We met nana, bampaw, mal mal, and uncle craig at CrackerBarrel for breakfast and then headed home for some bike riding and a visit from Oma. After a bit, we took Joey to nana and bampaws house and Ben, Dean, Mal Mal and I went to see Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur at the movie theater and then headed back to Nana's for cake, ice cream, and more presents!
Ben had a wonderful day and is about to call it a night. It has been raining here all day and I doubt the fireworks are going to happen. Regardless, Ben isn't that fond of fireworks anyway so he doesn't mind missing them!
I can hardly wait to see what adventures lay in store for us tomorrow. Happy Birthday Ben, we love you so very, very much

Awww...Benny wore his Purdue t-shirt on his birthday!!! I am sure that was in honor of Uncle Clint, Brookie and I since we weren't able to be there. We love you so much, Ben! Can't believe you are so old.
