I haven't updated on what is going on with the boys in a long while and Nana is getting impatient about the lack of postings lately so now seems like a good time to do so. Starting with my baby bug. Who is very much not a baby any more.
Joey's mood swings continue to keep us all dizzy. He is, at most times, a very easy going, flexible, fun-loving little boy. But then the wind blows and a whole new Joe emerges. He has a T.E.M.P.E.R. and his anger is usually directed toward his big brother (who very often deserves the wrath). Joey is loud, fiesty, obstinant, strong-willed, determined, and incorrigable at times. He can be a challenge to say the least. However, I really do have to say that Joey has a HUGE heart and is full of love. He is quick to make friends and people tend to gravitate toward him. He seems to really like making sure that everyone's needs are taken care of and he loves playing with other kids. Unlike his brother, Joey is very willing to step aside and let someone else be the leader. He is not at all a doormat, but he is also not bossy or a control freak....like some people in this house whose names rhyme with Hen (or to be fair, felony).
We had Joey's 3-year-old checkup (a bit delayed) a few weeks ago and he was 42 pounds (99th percentile) and 3 feet 1 inch tall (50th percentile). He is a tank. I have a sneaking suspicion that Joey is going to melt this summer, however, when he is able to stretch his legs and sprint around the neighborhood. A little fun in the sun will work some of that little tummy that I love so much off! Speaking of fun in the sun, we had a little spring tease a few weeks ago with temperatures up into the high 50s/low 60s for a few days. Joey was beyond thrilled. We took Jack on several walks, played basketball and baseball outside, and Joe got out his trucks to spend some quality time digging in the dirt. Joey is my little gardening partner so he and I have been plotting what new flowers we want to plant this spring and checking on our lillies, irises, and tulips as the tips of their green leaves are beginning to poke through the cold, wet dirt. We can't wait to get our hands dirty and dig in. Hurry Spring!
Joey just wrapped up another session of swim lessons. He LOVES the water but forgets to kick his legs and often sinks to the bottom...only to come up with his eyes wide open, a huge grin on his face, and a lot of giggles. He is hoping to start playing soccer again soon through Little Kickers.

Joey loves music and dancing. He has some sweet moves that he would love to show you if you ask! He also is really into doing forward rolls right now and jumping off of everything (i.e. the couch, his bed, any tall surface, etc.). Joey also loves movies. His current obsession is Bambi. Joey loves playing basketball, baseball, soccer...any sport involving a ball and, much like his brother, would rather be outside than anywhere else on earth. My boys need their fresh air.
When forced indoors, Joey really likes to play with puzzles, build with blocks, and play games (a current favorite is Go Fish!).
For all his nuttiness, Joey brings so much joy to our lives. We are so lucky to have him and thank God for his sweet, rambunctious, fiesty little boyness.

Joey is a good eater (clearly) and continues to prefer dairy, sweets, fruits, and vegetables and most often turns his nose up at meat. He loves grilled cheese and cheese pizza and his favorite fruit WAS strawberries but has now become grapes thanks to our recent discovery that Joe Bug is allergic to strawberries. boooo.
Joey is having a hard time with bedtime (and staying in his own bed by himself all night). We try to have a consistant bedtime routine with the boys but Joe continues to try to write his own routine. We typically head to bed between 7:45 and 8:00 p.m., read two books (his current favorite is any book with Clifford the Big Red Dog), sing two songs, and say a prayer. Dean or I then have to sit in the hallway outside of his bedroom until he falls asleep. Sometimes this takes 15 minutes...last night it took over an hour. I am really hoping this little ritual has ended by the time summer is here or day light saving time may be the death of me...no way will Joe go down before the sun does, which if memory serves, sometimes can be as late as 10:00 p.m. Yikes!
Ben is always, without exception, long asleep and peacefully dreaming before Joey finally gives up his fight and crashes. Joey then, probably 5 nights out of 7 will come into our room at sometime in the middle of the night and talk his dad into going back to his bed with him. No matter what time he goes to bed or how well or not well he sleeps, Joey is always. always. up before the sun. His typical time to wake up is between 6-6:30 a.m. He is a stinker and though there are many late nights and early mornings that Dean and I are annoyed by his horrible sleeping habits, it is also comforting to note that this is just a phase and "this too shall pass." Such is the wisdom that comes from parenting a second child, I suppose.
